Editor, proofreader, knitter, weightlifter, medieval history buff, art history nerd.
I’ve been a writer, editor, and proofreader for over 20 years. During that time, I’ve worked on a bit of everything: galley proofs for books and annual reports; museum didactics and grant applications; brochures, newsletters, radio ads, video scripts, and website copy.
Before launching Clockwork Scribe Consulting in 2024, I spent most of my career in the nonprofit sector. The last ten years of my career, I was a senior-level executive.
I’ve often joked that every person in a nonprofit has 12 jobs because there is never enough staff. You become a jack-of-all-trades out of necessity and often find yourself involved in things you never, ever thought you’d be doing. That was certainly my experience. It was, by turns, exhilarating, frustrating, terrifying, and deeply gratifying. I was fortunate to work with and learn from truly incredible and dedicated people at every organizational level.
I have a B.A. in English literature and an M.A. in art history (medieval art). I hold certificates of merit and distinction, respectively, from Knowadays for their Becoming an Editor and Becoming a Proofreader courses, and I’m a member of ACES: The Society for Editing.
Hmmm…what else? Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” makes me teary-eyed, Batman is my favorite comic book hero, and Dorothy Dunnett’s Lymond Chronicles is one of my favorite book series.
And I once drew a (very!) abbreviated Plantagenet family tree for one of my college graduate assistant instructors who was skeptical when I mentioned England’s King Richard III and his wife, Anne Neville, were related. (It was a class on Shakespeare’s plays, and we were reading Richard III. I was hiding in the corner of the classroom, hoping to make myself invisible, and he randomly called on me to answer a question about the relationship between Anne and Richard. I was so startled that I blurted out, “They were cousins!”, which wasn’t at all the relationship he meant and had nothing to do with the text of the play. He looked equally startled, then confused, and mercifully didn’t ask me anything else until after class ended.)
I think that may make me delightfully nerdy…or maybe just nerdy. But I’m okay with that.
Outside of work, you’ll likely find me knitting, weightlifting, playing board games with friends and family, or trying to make a dent in my ever-growing to-read pile.
