Proofreading is the final step in the editorial process and follows a line edit or copyedit. Think of it as one last quality check before your work is published.
Proofreading cleans up lingering errors that snuck through prior rounds of editing. This includes typos, missing punctuation, and formatting issues (particularly if a manuscript has already been typeset).
It doesn’t correct big-picture issues or tackle things like sentence structure and word choice.
If your goal is to publish what you’ve written—whether a book, a white paper, or a blog post—it’s always a good idea to have a second pair of eyes on your text. You’ll tend to overlook errors in what you’ve written because you’re so familiar with it.
